Wow, utterly scathing! I didn't love this back when I saw it nearer the time of its release, and this makes it sound like it's certainly not worth a revisit!

Sing Sing is on my radar, too. I saw the trailer in front of another movie I went to see, and it looks really powerful.

I wish I’d just watched Dodgeball instead.

Thx for the shoutout here James. What an interesting film that I’d never heard of. One that kinda reminds of it in the satire department and being from the same period is “Idiocracy” which my husband swears aged well!

I’ve never seen Idiocracy, but I should check it out. Maybe I’d have liked BASEketball more if I’d seen it in 1998…

The best movie ever made about a sport that doesn't exist has to be 1989's "Salute To The Jugger", aka "The Blood Of Heroes". If you ever watched "Fury Road" and wondered, "what is everyone doing offscreen, where no one is chasing each other or enslaving women for Immortan Joe?" this movie is your answer. With Rutger Hauer at his most awesome, directed by "Blade Runner" writer David Webb Peeples!

What a suggestion, thanks for this. I actually haven’t heard of this at all, so will definitely be checking it out.

That's one movie I had never heard of and can comfortably never consider watching then :D. Or maybe just the intro and stop while it's at its best.

Also I hope your dog feels better soon. It sucks when our furry friends are not feeling well and we can't do much to help.

Thank you! ☺️ Agreed, feeling helpless when pets are sick really is awful.

Re: the intro - I’ve included in the bonus section of the post, so you don’t even have to leave Substack to see it 😃

Oh damn how did I miss that! Perfect

I saw this movie when it first came out and thought it was great haha but I was a teenager back then so take that with a grain of salt. Plus I was obsessed with South Park back in the day too so that made me want to watch this. I wonder how it’d fare 25+ years later

I’d say you should rewatch it and compare, but I don’t want to do that to you.

Haha I can see that from your review.

Oof that Raiders line hurts. I am a broken hearted Bay Area sports fan.

If you need a non-sports show for general good vibes, I lean on AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER when I need a pick-me-up. I'm not much of an animation person in general, but the original show changed my mind about the wide cultural impact of a show intended for kids. Really worth a watch (and give Juno a squeeze for me).

Thanks! Interesting comfort pick too. I’ll have a look. I tend to just gravitate to Frasier or Gilmore Girls for comfort background noise 😃

‘Tis the season for both! A good cup of coffee pairs perfectly with FRASIER and GILMORE GIRLS, too. ☺️
